Julie SMITH, Baroness Smith of Newnham
Cambridge University

Baroness Smith of Newnham (Dr Julie Smith) is Reader in European Politics and Director of the European Centre at the Department of Politics and International Studies, Cambridge University, and a Fellow of Robinson College, Cambridge. 

She previously ran the European Programme at Chatham House and was City Councillor for Newnham Ward in Cambridge from 2003 to 2015. 

She became a member of the House of Lords in 2014, where she is Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on European Issues, including Defence. She has served on the inaugural House of Lords International Relations Committee since 2016. Having undertaken the three service strands of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme, Baroness Smith is currently a member of RCDS, the final element of that Scheme. She is Secretary of the Lords Defence Group and, since September 2018 a member of the Executive Committee of COMEC, the Council of Military Education Committees. 

Baroness Smith’s main research interests are in the history and politics of the EU. Her current work focuses on the UK’s relations with the EU; parliaments and the EU; and parliaments and budgetary politics. She is currently editing the Palgrave Handbook on European Referendums (due out in 2019). Recent publications include: The UK’s Journeys Into and Out of the EU: Destinations Unknown (London: Routledge, 2017; paperback edition May 2018).
