Since 2013, Christian W. HAERPFER is the President of the World Values Survey Association (WVSA), which manages the World Values Survey (WVS) - the largest academic and large-scale cross-national survey and scientific infrastructure in social sciences on values systems, value change in general and values of civilizations in particular. Previously, he helped found and worked intensively on regional comparative surveys such as the New Democracy Barometer – NDB, which studied social transformation and societal well-being in post-Communist Europe during the first post-Cold War decade, and the Eurasia Barometer - EAB, which has been analyzing social, economic and cultural change in Eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova), South Caucasus (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan) and Central Asia (Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan) since the beginning of 2000. Between 2012 and 2015, he also conducted applied sociological research in Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Libya, Iraq, Egypt and Jordan

Currently, he is also Full Professor of Sociology at the Department of Sociology and Director of the Social Research Laboratory in the College of Humanities and Social Science at the United Arab Emirates University in Al-Ain (UAE), and Full Professor of Political Science and Political Sociology in the Department of Political Science and the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna (Austria), as well as Visiting Honorary Professor in Sociology at the University of Almeria (Spain) and the V.N.Karazin National University of Kharkiv (Ukraine). Previously, he was Full Professor of Political Science and Political Sociology in the Faculty of Social Science at the University of Aberdeen (United Kingdom), as well as Visiting Professor in Sociology at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow (United Kingdom), Glasgow Caledonian University (United Kingdom), National University of Rwanda in Kigali and Butari (Rwanda), University of Kiev (Ukraine), Glasgow University (United Kingdom), CEU - Central European University in Prague (Czech Republic) and University of Salzburg (Austria). He has received Residential Fellowships from the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington D.C. (USA), the European University Institute in Florence (Italy), the University of Essex in Colchester (United Kingdom) and the Leverhulme Trust at Glasgow Caledonian University (UK).

Professor Haerpfer was the Founding Chair of the Research Committee No 17 on ‘Comparative Public Opinion’ of the International Political Science Association (IPSA), and in his capacity as “Research Committees Liaison Representative” he was Member of the Executive Committee of IPSA (Montreal, Canada) between 2016 and 2018.
